Adding BFR to normal training buys a little size and strength — not jumps or sprints

That blood flow restriction builds muscle at low loads is settled ground. The next question is different: if you add it on top of the resistance training you already do, is there anything extra to gain? This meta-analysis asked that in team-sport athletes.
Searching four databases through 11 September 2025 produced 12 studies covering 859 team-sport athletes, synthesised with a random-effects meta-analysis.
Size and strength went up
Against resistance training alone, adding blood flow restriction significantly induced muscle hypertrophy (standardised mean difference 0.32, 95% CI 0.05–0.58, P=0.02, I²=4%) and improved muscle strength (0.42, 0.18–0.66, P<0.001, I²=10%).
The I² values are worth noting. At 4% for hypertrophy and 10% for strength, heterogeneity between studies was very low — the direction of the result did not swing from study to study. The effects are small, but they are not noisy.
Jumping and sprinting did not
This is the practical conclusion. Jumping and sprint performance showed no statistically significant differences.
The combination is coherent. Blood flow restriction works by generating metabolic stress in a low-load, high-repetition environment to switch on growth signalling, whereas explosive power depends on the nervous system producing large force at high velocity. A bit more muscle and a bit more strength do not automatically become a faster sprint or a higher jump.
In the authors' own framing, blood flow restriction slightly improves hypertrophy and strength in team athletes and can be used as a complementary means of load management, but should be interpreted with caution. So who is it for?
"Complementary means of load management" places it precisely. It is for periods when adding more heavy load is not an option — in-season, or when joints are carrying accumulated stress — and you want a little more size and strength without raising total load much.
In an off-season block aimed at maximal strength, the order reverses. There, securing heavy loading and volume comes before adding a cuff to anything.
How this relates to your strength score
Standardised mean differences of 0.32 and 0.42 are small-to-moderate effects. Translated to Big 3 numbers, adding blood flow restriction is not the thing that makes a score jump. What moves a score is still training the three lifts heavy.
Where it earns its place is the stretch when that training is not possible. When pain or a competition calendar forces heavy work down, it lets you give up slightly less muscle and strength on the way through. Keep logging the Big 3 during those weeks and you can see exactly how far back you slipped.
