Three years of dance protected cognition and gait — but not leg muscle

How far does "just move in a way you enjoy" actually get you? Three years of follow-up gives half an answer — the brain and the walk held up, the legs did not.
The study followed 102 community-dwelling older adults, mean age 74.2 (93% women), across six sites in Japan. The dance group of 74 attended weekly hip-hop sessions and competed in an older-adult dance competition; the 28 controls continued their usual activities. Follow-up ran up to three years, with complete data on 59 participants.
Cognition and gait clearly favoured the dancers
Significant group × time interactions favouring the dance group started with cognition. MMSE differed by 0.58 points per year (P=0.007) and the MoCA visuospatial score by 0.27 per year (P=0.023).
The gait result is the more interesting one. Gait speed rose 0.065 m/s per year (P=0.031) while stride length did not change at all (P=0.243); left foot contact time fell 0.018 s per year (P=0.005). They did not get faster by taking longer steps — they got faster by spending less time on the ground. The authors read this as rhythm-based motor learning.
Local strength and balance improved too: right hip abduction strength rose 1.22 kg per year (P=0.016) and right single-leg stance time 10.3 s per year (P=0.026).
Yet muscle mass fell faster than in controls
Here the result flips. The dance group lost an extra 0.064 kg/m² of skeletal muscle mass index per year (P=0.020), and leg lean mass fell an additional 0.108 kg per year on the left (P<0.001) and 0.088 kg on the right (P=0.004). BMI did not change in either group (P=0.949).
The combination matters: body weight stayed put while leg lean mass drained away. On a bathroom scale, nothing happened. In reality muscle was being swapped for something else inside the same body weight — a change body weight alone can never detect.
This is observational, not randomised. People who join a dance programme may already differ from those who do not, and complete data covered 59 participants. The authors' own conclusion, though, is not hedged — dance participation alone was not sufficient to prevent age-related muscle loss, and resistance training plus adequate protein intake needs to be combined with it.
What a lifter takes from this
This is not data against cardio or dance. It is three years of numbers showing that different kinds of exercise protect different things. Rhythmic whole-body activity protected cognition and gait control. Muscle mass was not on that list.
The application is simple. If you attend a weekly dance or class-based session, place it alongside resistance training rather than instead of it. The stimulus that defends muscle mass has to go in separately, and that prescription is in exercise for sarcopenia and training hard after 50.
For tracking, this study makes the case for a strength score precisely. Body weight signalled nothing across three years. A Big 3 1RM, by contrast, falls honestly when leg lean mass goes. For anyone managing their condition past 40, squat and deadlift numbers are a far more sensitive early warning than the scale — which is the same reason a Muscle Index carries an age correction.

Should older adults drop dance and only lift?
No. Cognition, gait speed, single-leg stance and hip abduction strength all improved in the dance group. Only muscle mass was missing from that list, so the reading this data supports is dance in addition to resistance training, not instead of it.
