Digestive enzyme supplements do not help you absorb more protein

For anyone with a normally functioning pancreas, there is not enough evidence that digestive enzyme supplements improve protein absorption or muscle growth — the body produces whatever level of enzymes your intake requires. Gas and bloating after high-protein meals usually trace back to portion size, eating speed, lactose, or too little fibre, and fixing those four does far more.

Protein is going into everything, and digestive enzyme supplements have arrived alongside it, promising to break that protein down more efficiently so your body can use more of it — with less bloating. The claim usually skips one thing: your body already makes digestive enzymes.

What digestive enzymes actually do

They break food into molecules small enough to use. There are three core categories.

  • Amylase breaks down carbohydrates.
  • Lipase breaks down fats.
  • Protease breaks down proteins.

Digestion starts the moment food enters your mouth: the salivary glands release amylase and lipase, and further down the tract the stomach, pancreas and small intestine produce the proteases that handle protein.

So why does protein make you bloated?

The first thing gastroenterologists point at is not an enzyme deficiency but eating too much in one sitting. Spreading the same daily total across more meals resolves much of it. The second is speed — digestion begins in the mouth, and food inhaled at a desk in five minutes skips the chewing step entirely.

The rest is ingredients. If it is specifically shakes made with whey concentrate that bother you, lactose is the likelier culprit than enzymes, and whey isolate has significantly less of it. Sugar alcohols, gums and other additives trigger symptoms in some people. And chasing a protein target while neglecting fibre leads to constipation, one of the most common causes of bloating.

A detailed food journal kept for a few days usually reveals whether symptoms track a particular protein source, the size of the meal, or how fast you ate it.

Do they help you build muscle?

There is not enough evidence to say so. The human body is remarkably good at adapting enzyme production to intake. One small 2024 study found that protease supplementation got amino acids into the bloodstream somewhat faster — but it did not show that this translated into more muscle, more strength, better performance or faster recovery. Absorption speed and training outcomes are separate claims.

Who should take them

People with a diagnosed condition. The clearest example is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which can follow chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer or certain pancreatic surgeries. Each of those needs a different enzyme replacement therapy, which is why it calls for a prescription rather than an over-the-counter guess. Outside diagnosed disease, the strongest evidence is for functional dyspepsia.

If bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss or blood in the stool persists, see a doctor rather than covering it with a supplement — masking symptoms can delay the diagnosis of something more serious.

The short version

For a healthy person raising their protein intake, the consistent clinical advice is that the money goes further on food quality and fibre than on enzyme capsules. Training works the same way: when the Big 3 stall, the answer is rarely on the supplement shelf and usually in the large variables — total intake, sleep, and the volume in your programme.
