A full-body circuit builds stamina, not your big three numbers

Shaboozey, 31, is 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, and when he started training two years ago he could not hold a plank and could barely do five pushups. He now pushes a sled loaded with 550 pounds (about 250kg). The more interesting part is not the change but the shape of the session that produced it: there is no squat, no bench and no deadlift anywhere in it.
What is this session actually built for?
By his own account the target is not the mirror, it is the show — the stamina to push through a set that runs for hours, the focus to hold across it, and enough athleticism to move suddenly on stage. His trainer previously worked with an NFL tight end, and the programming shows it: thoracic mobility, then reaction-light work, core, jump rope and banded sprints, dumbbell compound movements, and a minute of battle ropes to finish. Every item asks for something different, and the rest between them is short.
How does that differ from maximal strength work?
The difference is not the exercise names, it is three variables. The load is bands and bodyweight rather than 90 percent of a max, the rest is near zero rather than three to five minutes, and eight exercises share one session. That combination keeps the heart rate up and builds endurance and recovery capacity, but it never asks the nervous system for the most force it can produce at once. The reverse is equally true — a big-three programme raises maximal force and does almost nothing for your ability to keep moving for thirty minutes. The two capacities do not substitute for each other.
Is there anything in the session worth borrowing?
- Banded situps for 10 to 20 reps, stopping one or two reps short of failure — an explicit instruction not to grind out core work. That is RIR 1 to 2, and the estimate gets more accurate with practice.
- Thoracic mobility goes first — if the upper back does not rotate and extend, the shoulder pays for it in every overhead and front-rack position. It functions less as a warmup than as a precondition for the day's positions.
- Reaction lights and banded sprints — training a response to an unpredictable cue. Useful on a stage or a field, and irrelevant standing in front of a loaded barbell.
So how should a lifter use it?
If your squat, bench and deadlift numbers are the goal, put a circuit like this after the main work or on its own day. Placed before it, it spends the force you needed for the squat and the day's log comes in low. If you are early in training, though, this shape is the better one — a body whose limit is five pushups needs volume of movement, not a maximal-strength programme. It is the same principle as where a lifter puts cardio.
The Muscle Index is calculated from squat, bench and deadlift one-rep maxes. However diligently you run this session, that number will barely move — not because the session is bad, but because it measures a different capacity. If you want proof the work is paying off, log how many minutes the circuit took and whether your form survived the last exercise, rather than watching the index.
A 550-pound sled is not an absolute strength figure. Sled pushes vary enormously with floor surface, the weight of the sled itself and the angle you push at, so the number does not travel between gyms. Use it to track your own change on the same sled and the same floor.
Frequently asked questions
Will full-body circuit training raise my one-rep max?
Barely. Maximal strength grows from heavy loads with enough rest to repeat them, and a circuit has neither. What it does raise is cardiovascular endurance and your ability to repeat efforts.
Can I do strength and circuit work on the same day?
Yes, but order decides the outcome. Finish the main lifts first and attach the circuit afterwards. Run the circuit first and the weight you can handle on the main lifts drops that day.
Which is better for a beginner?
If five pushups is the current limit, the circuit format is better. At that stage the need is total movement volume and basic patterns rather than maximal load — in one documented case it took someone from that point to pushing a 250kg sled in two years.
Should core work be taken to failure?
This session says to stop one or two reps short. Core exercises tend to lose form at the failure point and shift load onto the lower back, so leaving a rep or two in reserve gives a better ratio of stimulus to risk.
Can sled weight be used to compare strength?
Not reliably. The same load feels very different depending on the floor, the sled's own weight and the pushing angle. Treat it as a personal progress marker on one sled and one surface.
