Why is a flat sole only the entry requirement?

Why does traction become the next problem?

The failure mode is not a dramatic slip — it is quieter than that: your stance on rep three is not the stance you set up with on rep one. So what should you actually look at?
- Outsole rubber and tread pattern — the thin, smooth rubber on a canvas shoe is enough on dry rubber matting and the first thing to slide on a floor dusted with chalk.
- Whether the upper holds your foot — if the sole stays put but your foot slides inside the shoe, the result is identical. Abrasion-resistant spacer mesh and reinforced panels help here.
- Whether you mix in dynamic work — the same reviewer picked a lighter model for hang cleans and front squats. Static maximal effort and explosive movement do not ask the same thing of a shoe.
Do you need different shoes on different days?
