Volume beats intensity for hypertrophy — up to about 30–40 sets a week

For hypertrophy specifically, the weight of the evidence favours more weekly sets per muscle group. The optimum sits near 30–40 fractional sets per week, but returns diminish well before that, so the best value for most people is lower. If time is the constraint, 4–10 genuinely hard sets per muscle per week taken close to failure still produces substantial growth.

Few arguments in lifting last as long as this one. On one side, the high-volume camp: more sets, more growth, usually with a couple of reps left in reserve. On the other, the high-intensity camp: one all-out set is enough. Both sides have data.

How far is it worth pushing volume?

Several meta-analyses, including the recent one by Pelland and colleagues, point the same way: more weekly sets per muscle group produced more hypertrophy. The relationship held across rest intervals, study lengths, proximity to failure, and training experience.

It is not linear, though. Returns diminish. The optimum appears to be somewhere near 30–40 fractional sets per week, but reaching it costs a lot of time and fatigue, and the best return per hour sits below that for most lifters.

The limits of high volume are practical rather than theoretical: it is slow, tiring, and hard to sustain alongside everything else. Most studies also isolate one or two muscle groups, so what is locally recoverable is not automatically recoverable across a full-body programme.

Does low-volume, high-intensity training work?

It does. The large meta-analysis by Robinson and colleagues found that, all else equal, the closer a set is taken to failure, the more growth follows. Hermann and colleagues found single-set training produced hypertrophy, with training to failure beating two reps in reserve. Larsen and colleagues found that continuing past full-range failure with partials produced more growth than stopping at it.

So what should you actually do?

There is no clean winner. Studies isolate one variable at a time, so the matchup people actually argue about — high volume kept submaximal versus low volume taken to failure — has barely been tested head to head. The honest answer is that both work and combining them usually works better.

  • If you have time, lean on volume. It also suits anyone who needs to avoid failure for injury or safety reasons.
  • If you are short on time, lean on intensity. Four to ten sets per muscle per week works well when they are genuinely near failure.
  • If you can do both, do both — and track performance, so you can see the lifts holding or rising.

Most people can recover from more than they assume. In work by Brigatto and colleagues, lifters performed close to 200 total weekly sets without hypertrophy suffering, and in the Enes quadriceps study the high-volume group averaged 42 sets per week for 12 weeks, close to failure, and still grew more. In practice the bottleneck is usually insufficient stimulus, not recovery.

If you are adding weekly sets, add them over two to four weeks rather than doubling at once, and watch whether your main lifts hold.

How this relates to your strength score

Everything above is about hypertrophy. A relative strength score is built on Big 3 one-rep maxes, and size and strength overlap without being the same thing. Adding volume raises your long-term strength ceiling, but converting that muscle into squat, bench and deadlift numbers still means practising those lifts heavy. Logging your Big 3 through a volume block is how you find out whether the conversion is happening.
